Time to File Homestead Exemption

For all of our new neighbors…
If you own your own home and live in it in Texas, make sure you’re taking advantage of your homestead property tax exemption. It’s completely free to file and will save you $200-$300/year on your annual property taxes. There are also other exemptions available, such as for senior citizens and disabled veterans.

If you’re not sure which exemptions you have, let me know and I can help look it up for you

You only need to file once, and the exemption will be valid for all future years.

File your homestead exemption before April 1 with the Bell County Appraisal District

ROAD CONSTRUCTION – MONDAY DECEMBER 9TH

ROAD CONSTRUCTION – MONDAY DECEMBER 9TH

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will begin a project to modify a portion of FM 3481 in Harker Heights, December 9, 2019.

The project, designed to increase safety on FM 3481, will widen the two-lane roadway with a continuous center-turn lane from FM 2410 to Del Rey Drive and add a new traffic signal at the intersection of FM 3481, Vineyard Trail and Cedar Knob Rd.

The project is being undertaken by Texas Materials Group, Inc., of Cedar Park, at a cost of $3 Million, and is scheduled for completion in the Summer of 2020, weather permitting.

TxDOT advises the traveling public to expect temporary lane closures, delays and some congestion between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily, within the work zone, for the duration of the project.

Motorists are urged to observe all warning signs and exercise caution when passing near construction personnel and equipment in the project area.

Septic Systems

When you move into a home with an aerobic septic system…

Your builder or previous owner paid for a one-year or two-year contract with a septic maintenance company. You’ll be required by the county health department to renew that contract every year. The septic company will come out every 4 months to inspect the system and give you a report to let you know how it’s doing and if it needs pumping.

Contact your septic maintenance company and ask them to come out and give you a free lesson on how to maintain your system. Most of the systems in our neighborhood require special chlorine tablets or bleach to help keep the lines clear. And there are some things you shouldn’t flush or put in the disposal. Septic repairs can get expensive, so you’ll want to make sure you’re treating yours well!

Freeze warning. Time to winterize your sprinkler system!

The cold weather is coming tonight! Time to cover water faucets and plants. And if you have an in-ground sprinkler system, please READ BELOW (IMPORTANT!)

Most sprinkler systems have a backflow preventer section of pipe that sticks up above the ground about 18-24 inches. Because this is exposed to wind, it freezes very easily and can explode under pressure. When temperatures get to 35 or below, it’s strongly recommended to drain that section of pipe or cover it (or both). Draining it only takes a couple of minutes and a flat-head screwdriver. This can save you a lot of heartache and a $250-$300 repair bill.

To cover it, you have a few options. Wrap it with a few old towels, then cover the whole thing with an upside-down plastic Rubbermaid type of container. Or wrap it with insulation and duct tape a black plastic trash bag over the insulation. Or buy a sprinkler sock made for this purpose; they cost around $50-$100. Check Amazon or Ewing Irrigation on 2410 in Harker Heights for insulated sprinkler covers. For the really cold days, or several freezing days in a row , covering it may not be enough. • Harker Heights is working to take over Dana Peak Park from the Army Corps of Engineers and annex it into the city. This will allow the to handle fire and EMS services at Dana Peak. (They’ve been wanting to do this for years, but it appears like they might be getting close to actually getting it done.)

“Slow Down or Move Over” Policy Being Enforced on Interstate 14

The Harker Heights Police Department Special Operations Unit will be partnering with surrounding agencies on February 1, 2018 to conduct a county-wide “slow down, or move over” education and enforcement action along Interstate 14. Please remember, state law requires drivers nearing stopped emergency vehicles (with lights activated) to either slow down or change lanes. The law states a driver must either vacate the lane closest to the stopped emergency vehicle if the road has multiple lanes traveling in the same direction OR slow down 20 miles per hour below the speed limit (if the speed limit is below 25 MPH the driver must slow down to 5 MPH).

Please do your part and help protect your emergency workers!
